I’m 45, nearly 46 and until the end of last year, I hadn’t been to an actual commercial gym for 7 years (I’m fortunate to have decent training facilities at home because of my job).
BACKSTORY:
Back in November I decided to join a gym again (my therapist had advised me to spend more time out of my house as it’s where I also work as she felt it would do me good).
I’m not going to lie, I was nervous.
Which seems ridiculous.
But I was.
In my working day, I regularly encourage people to face their fears as a way to grow and overcome them and I always say to my kids, if you don’t like something you need to do it until you do like it - it was time for me to take my own advice.
Day 1 was pretty overwhelming - loads and I mean LOADS of equipment spread over a huge space.
I thought to myself: “what would I tell my clients to do?” And I imagined my kids watching me and saying “go on, mum” (because they so would!).

Here’s what I did:
👉🏻Asked for help, watched and learned!

I wandered around, had a warm up, watched a few people on some machines, asked a few people how to use some equipment, the workout was OK.
Day 2 feeling a bit more confident, did an upper body routine, asked a gym bro to spot my bench press.
All was good.
FAST FORWARD TO THIS WEEK….
👉🏻I found myself in the midst of the multifunctional rig and stretch area working through a circuit I’d planned……
Surrounded by lots of (much younger) people (mainly guys) and had to give myself a good mental talking to and remind myself that this was my journey and not to compare. The POSITIVE SELF TALK worked and I had a BRILLIANT workout with some mean sled pushes for my finisher.

Just because something is uncomfortable doesn’t mean it will always feel that way. The best way to feel better about something is to face it. If you can’t face it alone ASK FOR HELP! Most people just aren’t that scary and will gladly help.

Now I’m off to decide whether to start learning calisthenics 😂
